PTFE bushings

PTFE bushings, full name Polytetrafluoroethylene bushings, commonly known as "Teflon bushings" or "oil-free bushings," are often referred to as "self-lubricating bearings." They are sliding components primarily made from polytetrafluoroethylene or composite materials based on this polymer. Leveraging the material's inherently low friction coefficient, exceptional chemical inertness, and wide operating temperature range, PTFE bushings can operate stably for long periods under harsh conditions such as no lubrication, strong corrosion, or extreme temperatures. They are widely used in industries like chemical processing, food, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and general machinery, serving as one of the key components in modern industry for solving lubrication problems and corrosion resistance issues.

    . Physical and Chemical Properties

PTFE bushings, made from Polytetrafluoroethylene or composite materials based on it, possess the following core characteristics:

    . Physical Properties

Its density is approximately 2.10 to 2.30 × 10³ kg/m³, with a melting point of 327°C. It has a wide continuous operating temperature range, from -180°C up to +260°C. Its thermal conductivity is relatively low, around 0.256 W/m·K, and its water absorption rate is extremely low, less than 0.01%, meaning dimensions remain stable and it does not swell when exposed to water. Its friction coefficient is very low, only 0.11 under a load of 2 MPa, providing excellent self-lubricating properties.

    2. Chemical Properties

PTFE bushings offer exceptional chemical stability, resisting corrosion from nearly all chemicals except for a very few substances like molten alkali metals. They also exhibit excellent electrical insulation, with a volume resistivity of over 1×10¹⁵ Ω·m and a low dielectric constant around 2.1. Furthermore, they have good weatherability and are not prone to aging, but their radiation resistance is poor, making them unsuitable for high-radiation environments.

    3. Mechanical Properties

Regarding mechanical properties, its tensile strength is about 25 to 27.6 MPa, flexural modulus is approximately 700 MPa, and compressive strength at 5% deformation is 12.9 MPa. It is important to note that its hardness is relatively low, the material is soft, prone to deformation, and has poor creep resistance. Therefore, in practical applications, this is often improved by adding fillers, using modified PTFE compounds (e.g., adding glass fiber, carbon fiber, graphite, molybdenum disulfide, or bronze powder).

    Application Areas

PTFE bushings are widely used in environments requiring corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, or where lubrication is not possible.

In the chemical and petroleum fields, they are commonly used in valves, pumps, autoclaves, and reactors, primarily due to their resistance to strong acids, bases, and solvents. In the food and pharmaceutical industries, they are typical components in food processing machinery, packaging equipment, and pharmaceutical machinery. Their oil-free characteristic effectively prevents product contamination and meets strict hygiene standards.

In the textile and light industry, they can be found in high-speed rotating parts of textile machinery, as well as in paper separation claws and roller bushings in copiers and printers. In the refrigeration and compressor industry, they are often used as crankshaft bearings in rolling piston compressors to address local wear issues caused by thickened motor cores and reduced shaft diameters, while also improving the oil film lubrication.

Furthermore, PTFE bushings perform excellently in various general machinery applications like cylinders, valves, vacuum pumps, and high-pressure machines, especially in equipment where adding lubricants is impossible. They are also suitable for metallurgy and high-temperature applications, such as rolling mills and furnace equipment, capable of operating long-term at temperatures up to 250°C. In underwater or special media environments, like submersible pumps and marine equipment, their water resistance and non-absorbent nature effectively prevent corrosion.

    Advantages Compared to Other Products

The most significant advantage of PTFE bushings is their fully self-lubricating nature. Due to polytetrafluoroethylene having one of the lowest coefficients of friction, they can operate normally even without oil, achieving maintenance-free operation and significantly reducing equipment maintenance costs.

Secondly, their corrosion resistance is extremely strong, allowing them to function effectively in harsh chemical media such as strong acids, bases, and organic solvents – a capability unmatched by metal bearings. Additionally, PTFE bushings have a wide temperature adaptability, maintaining stable performance from cryogenic temperatures of -180°C up to high temperatures of +260°C.

The material itself possesses a certain degree of conformability and embedment, effectively absorbing vibration, reducing noise, and accommodating minor misalignments. Finally, being free of oil or grease, they do not suffer from aging or deterioration issues, making them particularly suitable for electronic, medical, and food processing environments requiring cleanliness or avoiding contamination.

    Usage Precautions

Several key points need attention when using PTFE bushings in practice.

First is the issue of poor thermal conductivity. PTFE has a low thermal conductivity coefficient, so frictional heat is not easily dissipated. In high-speed or heavy-load conditions, heat dissipation must be evaluated. If necessary, consider designing bushings with thinner walls or using metal-backed composite bushings.

Second is the high coefficient of thermal expansion. Its linear expansion is about ten times that of steel. When designing and installing, sufficient clearance must be预留 to prevent seizure due to expansion at high temperatures.

Third is the tendency for poor creep resistance or cold flow. Pure PTFE is prone to permanent deformation under load. For heavy-load applications, it is essential to choose filled or modified materials, such as those containing glass fiber, carbon fiber, or graphite.

Regarding the choice of mating shaft, to achieve optimal wear performance, the surface hardness of the mating shaft should ideally be no less than HRC 50. The surface finish should be moderate, not necessarily smoother the better; a roughness Ra in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 μm is typically recommended.

Finally, regarding the installation method, an interference fit is generally used for pressing into the housing. Care must be taken to apply force evenly during pressing to avoid deforming or buckling the bushing.

    Selection Guide

To ensure a PTFE bushing suits specific operating conditions well, consider the following aspects during selection.

First is operating condition assessment. Clarify the load characteristics (low-speed heavy load vs. high-speed light load), operating speed or PV value (Pressure x Velocity), ambient temperature, and the type of media the bushing will contact.

Second is material selection. For general-purpose applications, choose pure PTFE. To improve wear resistance and creep resistance, select filled PTFE. For example, glass fiber improves wear resistance, graphite or molybdenum disulfide further reduces the friction coefficient, and carbon fiber enhances thermal conductivity and creep resistance. For heavy-load or intermittent motion applications, consider metal-backed PTFE composite bushings, which combine the strength of metal with the self-lubrication of PTFE.

Regarding dimensional design, determine the basic dimensions based on the shaft diameter. Based on the estimated temperature rise and required operating clearance, calculate and預留 sufficient clearance for thermal expansion. Typically, the recommended clearance for PTFE bushings is larger than for metal bearings.

Finally, consider the mounting structure. Decide whether a simple cylindrical shape is sufficient, or if a flanged design is needed for easier axial location.

    Summary

In summary, the PTFE bushing is a specialized sliding component based on high-performance engineering plastics. Its core value lies in solving the application bottlenecks of traditional metal bearings under special conditions such as oil-free operation, strong corrosion, and wide temperature ranges. It achieves maintenance-free operation through self-lubrication via its extremely low friction coefficient, resists corrosion from various media with its strong chemical stability, and adapts to harsh environments with its wide temperature tolerance. However, its drawbacks – poor thermal conductivity, high thermal expansion, and weak creep resistance – require engineers to comprehensively consider the operating conditions during selection and design. This includes rationally choosing filler materials, precisely calculating clearances, and optimizing the mating shaft process. Correctly selecting and applying PTFE bushings not only effectively enhances equipment reliability and service life but also reduces long-term maintenance costs, making them an indispensable component in the design of many critical pieces of equipment.
