What are the structural characteristics of a skeletal seal?

2026-03-01

1. Corrosion, dust, and intrusion protection

The cylindrical shape of the oil seal’s outer surface ensures a static seal for the internal cavity. The rubber outer edge of the internal metal skeleton, together with the exposed edges of the metal skeleton, are designed for skeletal sealing. In most cases, these components require polishing and electroplating with anti-corrosion coatings. A twisted spring-loaded sealing lip accommodates shaft movement, while an improved sealing-lip structure enhances the stability of the static seal, thereby boosting overall sealing performance. In special applications, an anti-contamination lip—or multiple anti-contamination lips—may be added to prevent the ingress of external contaminants and dust.

2. Heat and pressure resistance

Due to design and structural considerations, high-speed rotating shafts should be sealed with high-speed, wear-resistant oil seals, while low-speed shafts should use slow-speed oil seal products; low-speed oil seals are not suitable for high-speed rotation, and vice versa. For operating environments at elevated temperatures, polypropylene-based or silicone–fluorine–fluorosilicone rubber seals should be selected. Efforts should also be made to reduce the oil temperature inside the reservoir; for low-temperature applications, cold-resistant rubber seals should be chosen. In general, standard oil seals have limited pressure-handling capability, and excessive pressure can cause deformation of the seal. Under conditions of excessive pressure, skeleton-type seals should be equipped with pressure-resistant support rings or upgraded to pressure-resistant sealing products.

3. High environmental requirements

Skeleton seals are components that place stringent demands on the storage environment. Improper handling during transportation and storage can damage the seal itself and even compromise the normal operation of the entire machine. Before use, avoid opening the packaging too frequently. High temperatures and excessive heat can accelerate rubber aging, resulting in

This skeleton seal should be kept out of direct sunlight and high-temperature environments for extended periods. During transportation, avoid impacts to prevent spring distortion or detachment and seal deformation. To prevent corrosion, keep the seal away from acidic and alkaline liquids, and do not use wire ties to secure the seal to avoid damage to the sealing lip.
